For over forty years the community has come together for a heated game of volley ball known as The Cherry Bowl. Our local team the “Grovettes" have been serving Suffolk County Law Enforcement (the “Copettes”) intense sportsmanship and good vibes since the game began in 1984 to improve the strained relationship between cops and residents. We take a look back at the history of this iconic event, hearing from the founders and players on both sides of the net.
QUEEN OF P.A.W.S
Valerie Perez began reaching out to save the lives of animals on Fire Island as a personal mission, which turned into a fundraising movement that brought many talented Cherry Grove residents to the stage to present a fabulous show of singing, dancing, jokes and fabulous drag entertainment. Let’s boogie down memory lane to find out what P.A.W.S shows were all about with amazing archival footage.
PASSION PIT
Beloved community member Bobbie Green was involved in so many of the various groups in the Grove, but it is her passion for making “her spot on the beach” the most welcoming and well kept few feet of sand on the entire island. Come and sit with us as we learn the history of how “The Pit” became Bobbie’s daily devotion to community and creating new connections.
LOVE PORSCHE
Twenty-five years ago Brant Kaiwi (aka Porsche) came to Cherry Grove and unleashed a quarter century of epic entertaining. Using only her voice she is able to transform into a laundry list of queer icons...Porsche makes you feel like Judy or Janis are right there in the room with you. In celebration of this anniversary, we spotlight a 2005 performance that is a quintessential representation of this super talented queen and the perfect example of why we all Love Porsche.
